Modern data platforms: Choosing the right fit for an AI ready future

The conversation around data platforms has changed dramatically over the last few years. What was once primarily about reporting efficiency and storage cost is now fundamentally about enabling AI, automation, and faster decision making across the business. At the same time, the number of available platforms, concepts, and architectural patterns has exploded - making it harder than ever to decide what the “right” platform actually is.

 

In this blog, we take a practical look at how today’s leading platforms differ, and what it really means to be AI-ready. Rather than advocating a single “winner,” our goal is to give you a clear framework for making informed decisions based on your organization’s needs.

 

Different platforms, different strengths

Although platforms like Databricks, Snowflake, and Microsoft Fabric are all trying to solve the same overarching problem, they approach it from very different angles.

Databricks is deeply rooted in open‑source technologies and Apache Spark. It excels at large‑scale data processing, complex transformations, and advanced analytics. Its strengths become especially clear when working with massive datasets, streaming use cases, or machine learning workflows. Tools like MLflow and Unity Catalog give strong support for model lifecycle management and fine‑grained governance, while the developer experience is optimized for code‑first teams that value CI/CD and local development. The trade‑off is complexity: Databricks offers a lot of flexibility, but getting the most out of it requires skill and experience, both technically and operationally.

Snowflake, by contrast, is built around simplicity and performance, with SQL at its core. Its clean separation of storage and compute makes elastic scaling straightforward, and its cross‑cloud nature allows organizations to run the same platform on Azure, AWS, or GCP. Snowflake is particularly strong in analytics workloads, data sharing between organizations, and quick time to value. Many design decisions are made for you, which lowers operational overhead but also limits how much control you have over infrastructure and orchestration. Machine learning capabilities are evolving rapidly, but Snowflake remains primarily an analytics-first platform.

Microsoft Fabric takes a more integrated, ecosystemdriven approach. It brings together data engineering, data warehousing, realtime analytics, and reporting into a single experience built around OneLake. Fabric’s tight integration with Azure, Power BI, and Microsoft 365 makes it especially attractive for organizations already invested in the Microsoft stack. Features like shortcuts and mirroring reduce data movement, and governance is strongly supported through Purview. Fabric offers impressive end-to-end coverage but is still maturing in areas such as CI/CD and local development, and its rapid pace of change means best practices are still emerging.


 

Making a decision: What actually matters

Choosing a data platform isn’t about finding the objectively “best” product. It’s about understanding how different trade‑offs align with your organization’s priorities.

Cost models are often a major factor, but it’s important to look beyond headline pricing. Some platforms offer granular, pay-as-you-go consumption, while others are based on capacity tiers. Transparency, predictability, and the operational effort required to keep costs under control can matter just as much as raw price. Total cost of ownership also includes the people side: how easy it is to build, operate, and govern the platform with your current skills.

Developer experience and governance are equally critical. Platforms differ in how steep their learning curves are, how well they support CI/CD and local development, and how they handle lineage, access control, and metadata. Code first teams with strong engineering practices will often gravitate toward more flexible platforms, while teams focused on rapid delivery and self-service analytics may prefer solutions that emphasize simplicity and preconfigured experiences.


What “AI-Ready” really means

AI readiness is often misunderstood. It’s tempting to focus on flashy features like natural language querying or built-in AI agents, but these capabilities only create value if the underlying data foundation is solid.

An AI-ready data platform starts with clear ownership. If no one owns the data, no one is responsible for its quality or correctness. Trust is built through measurable data quality, including freshness, completeness, and consistency. Strong governance is essential to ensure that access is controlled at the right level, especially when AI tools make it easier than ever to explore data in new ways. Finally, end-to-end lineage is crucial, both for compliance and for understanding how data flows from source systems to business insights.

Interestingly, these requirements are not new. They are classic data engineering principles. The difference is that AI raises the stakes: poor governance and low data quality are amplified when users and systems interact with data through conversational or automated interfaces.

All major platforms are investing heavily in AI capabilities, whether it’s Databricks with Genie and MLflow, Snowflake with Cortex, or Fabric with data agents and operational agents. The platforms differ in focus, but the pattern is the same: AI features are only as good as the foundation they are built on.

 

The case for a “best-of-breed” approach

Unified platforms are appealing, but they also carry risk. Vendor strategies change, new technologies emerge, and business requirements evolve. Locking everything into a single platform can limit flexibility and make future changes more expensive.

A best-of-breed approach challenges the idea that every capability must come from the same vendor. Instead, it focuses on choosing the right tool for each specific job—sometimes combining platforms, sometimes supplementing them with platform agnostic tools for ingestion, transformation, orchestration, or governance. This approach introduces additional complexity, but it also reduces vendor lock in and creates more freedom to adapt over time.

In practice, many organizations end up somewhere in the middle: leveraging the strengths of a primary platform while remaining open to integrating other tools where they add clear value.

 

Final thoughts

Modern data platforms are powerful, but they are not one-size-fits-all. Each option comes with its own strengths, limitations, and assumptions about how teams work and what they value. AI readiness is less about specific features and more about disciplined data engineering, governance, and ownership.

The real challenge is not selecting a platform - it’s designing an architecture that supports your business today while remaining flexible enough for what comes next.
